The Kardashian Fedora

Further to my blog two weeks ago, I am sad to report that I was unable to pick up the Fedora. The last one sold from the San Francisco Gucci store. Sniff, sniff mope, mope. This was the apparently the last of the Gucci fedoras to sell in the USA. We don't yet have A/W stock in Gucci Sydney and won't for some time.

I don't think "devastated" is too large a word for use here. You know when you see something that you just have to have. It's not ok, or cool, or nice. It's just unbelievably you and so perfect a companion for your existing wardrobe. Uh anyway, such is the world of fashion. You win some you lose some. Still, in the meantime, if any of you see a worthy replacement, please do let me know. I'm keen to get me a hat this Autumn.

Smooth Caramel

As we southern hemesphites head briskly towards the winter months, I've been spending a little time thinking about what colours I'm going to wrapping myself up in this winter. And thus far, it's all about caramel... and my old favourite orange will be present in the accessories I wear. A citrus shot in the midst of August always feels good.

So what are the key pieces one should consider buying in caramel? What about a caramel cape? Love a cape. Or a buttery smooth leather clutch or messenger bag. Big fan of the Alexa by Mulberry I am.
And I never could go past a great loafer or leather flat. Gucci do a beautiful chocolate pair with tassels (thank you Net A Porter, see below).
And then of course you've got your standard wardrobe staples in cashmere : the coat (pea length this season), the wrap (something tribal I think, maybe with a touch of gold) and what about some meltingly soft leather gloves. Always chic, forever classic and fabulously now when accessorised with something fun and quirky.

April Shoe Review

The Prada blue & white woven ankle strap pump. S/S collection.
A while back I spouted forth about the necessity for all of us stylish women, and men now that I think of it, to have a pair of statement shoes in closet. I invested in a most devine pair of Pierre Hardy power wedges in yellow and grey (see below) and I have caught myself perving on them in their box several times since. For it is true that a great pair of shoes can make a person very, very happy. And as for the truly life-altering Pradas above, well I haven't added them to my collection yet but they're on my e-bay 'to trawl' list at the end of the next northern summer. Surely there's a spoilt Manhattan princess who'll wear them a few times this Summer and then declare them totally obsolete come mid September... her trash will be my true ankle-buckled pleasure.
The Pierre Hardy colour block wedges in canvas and patent leather.
But it's this time of year, when the seasons are turning when we find ourselves looking for a wardrobe update. So here is my April shoe review. Part II today and the rest tomorrow. Let me know if you want me to find the perfect shoe for any occasion. That I can do!

The First Date After Work Shoe
Isabel Marant raffia and leather pumps.

The "Cruising the Markets" Shoe
Michael Kors buckled leather flats.
The Easy Yet Incredibly Chic Day Shoe
Pierre Hardy perspex and leather sandal.
The Thinking Man's Rock Chick Bootie
Alexander McQueen crystal studded suede ankle boots.

STAY TUNED FOR PART II TOMORROW...
All shoes above available now on Net A Porter.

The Perfect Winter Brogue

Stylish brogue-wearing gent, courtesy of the Sartorialist.
There's a trend that I'm absolutely in love with which I fear I'll never wear.  You see the stylish leather brogue has made a rather big come back, but am I the only one who thinks that only suave city men and tall, skinny women can wear them?

I just think a shoe so obviously flat needs a leg long of calf and slim of thigh.

Anyway, it wont stop me lusting after it. If any of you have an outfit suggestion which would enable a non-amazonian woman to wear them, please send pronto!

The Hunt for the Brown Fedora

Its not the most intellectual of stimuli, but I'm not ashamed to admit, I spend more than a little time watching the Kardashians on their various TV shows Lately its all about 'Kourtney and Kim Take New York' (or is it Kim and Kourtney?)

Anyway, I think Kim's sweet but of all the sisters, Kourtney (or Kourt as I prefer to call her) is by far my fave. She's not afraid to take the piss and has the best sense of style by far. She's another one of those celebrities I could easily have a drink with down the pub.

So on a recent episode I spied this hat (pictured above) and I can't stop thinking about it. And you know what that means.... MUST. GET. ME THAT. HAT.

It's a brown, felt fedora and it's from Gucci.

I briefed my husband on this most important of missions as he's in NYC at the moment. He ventured on in to the 5th Avenue flagship to try and find it, but alas, they were sold out. Apparently there's one in their San Francisco store. I've emailed them...

And so I wait in hope. I'll keep you posted.

SAGs - Winners and Losers

After the saucy and chic spread of gowns we were given at the Golden Globes, I was chomping at the Gucci bit to see what the ladies offered at the Screen Actor's Guild Awards.  And the good news is, the ladies didn't disapoint.

Woman of the moment Natalie Portman was pure, white, elegance in Azzaro. Having mastered the art of dressing superbly while pregnant, she has upped the ante once again off the big screen.
Interestingly, newly appointed Versace ambassador January Jones was wearing Carolina Herrera. Fashion forward and willing to break the rules, January's rivalling the uber models right now in terms of bringing mass exposure to designers.
Again Helena Bonham Carter shook up the Hollywood heavies with her take on red carpet and I loved it. A llittle more orthodox than the Golden Globes ensemble but when paired with the sunglass of the moment, the retro Clubmaster, she elevates the otherwise simple black and white gown to Coolest Girl in School level.
Christina Hendricks has a body made for sin and she relishes opportunities to flash it to us with bits of breast and lashings of leg  always on show. This time it was L'Wren scott. Flattering and sublimely cut but I don't think black's her best colour. Give me emerald green next time please Christina.
Glee girl Michelle Lea stepped up to the fashion plate in an Oscar de la Renta fail-safe gown. Stunning, beautifully sexy but given her age, I think she can push the boundaries more. She can wear this if Glee's still cutting it in 20 years time.
I was very impressed to see Nicole Kidman step away from white last night. She vamped it up in a black Nina Ricci lace spanish style number, reinstating her fashion credibility. I also loved her hair. Up, loose and sexy. Nic had the glint in her eye again. Big tick Nic.
Clare Danes went for classic and feminine in Louis Vuitton. Pretty, feminine and understated but a genuine awards gown worn well. Again, great hair. Classic. No bells and whistles.
But my number 1 SAG girl for 2011? Well I just loved Hillary Swank in this piece of picture perfect Versace. Great hair, great colour, great cut. What a woman.

Golden Globes - my verdict

Well apparently it was a hot old day in Hollywood today. January 16, 80 degrees farenheit... but what of the frocks. Were they hot? Well, kind of. They were better than they often are but there were still the obligatory shockers.

I'm always amazed when I see the celebs on the red carpet and how safe they are. Always the same, nothing that interesting, princess dresses everywhere, un natural hair dos not doing much for anyone and too many flesh tones on people who shouldn't wear flesh tones (Nic...?).
The No Shows
Firstly, I was hanging out all day to see what Blake Lively wore and she wasn't even there?! And what of Marianne Coulthard? I desperately wanted to see this French beauty in all her pregnant glory. And what about George and Elisabetta? I hang out for them every year. Where were they? SNuggles up in bed watching it on tele in Como I suppose.
The Big Ticket Items
I was also keen to see Natalie (Portman), Angelina, Helena (Bonham Carter), Toni Colette and Jackie Weaver. Well Jackie and Toni didn't rate a mention. Disappointing but still heros in my eyes. So to Natalie. 6 months pregnant and looking very relaxed. What a face! And what a dress. It's the kind of dress you don't openly LOVE at the outset but once you look at her in it, all bump and beauty, you end up loving it. Viktor and Rolf and very cool. And with the trend of the night. Red lips. Fabulous.
The Class Acts
Angelina. Fabulous. Ange hasn't wowed me since that amazing jade jewellery she wore a few years back but wow did she pull out the big guns tonight. Absolutely gorgeous in an emerald Versace to the floor sequined gown. Dynasty pointy shoulders, high round neck, loose, natural hair... the lot. It worked Ange it really did.
Helena. I love Helena. Always guaranteed to break up the LA monotony with a mish mash of who knows what on her person. Today in Vivienne Westwood complete with bustle, mismatching shoes, mini tortoise shell club masters, birds nest hair and dramatic makeup, Helena made me smile. And in the midst of a fairly uninteresting broadcast, that was nice. Ah thank you for being un-Hollywood.
January Jones. I loved her cobalt blue Versace last year with the coffee filter boobs and she managed to back it up this year with a sizzling red Versace to the floor fringed number. HOT. Ignore the MISS branding on this pic. I LOVE it.
Clare Danes and Emma Stone from Easy A, both wore fab tangerine and pink Calvin Klein collection gowns. Beautiful. Sleek. Simple. Surprising and fresh. Big tick ladies.
The Unknowns
There were the unknowns (to ma anyway) like Jennifer Lawrence whom i don't know but she looked great in a black Louis Vuitton 50s number, and Olivia Wilde from  House worked a very large but impressive mocha Marchesa.  Last year Sofia Vegara an Unknown to me, but I've since fallen in love the with Modern Family. I LOVE her. And tonight i loved her in the red va va voom dress which cinched her waist, brought forth her boobs and just generally accentuated her fabulous Latino ness. Like Natalie, Sofia rocked a dress I'd never wear.

The Greenies
A lotta green this year. The aforementioned Angelina, as well as Catherine Zeta Jones, Elisabeth Moss and the stunning Mila Kunis. Breathtaking in emerald, just like Ange, only different. And lets just look at Annie again. Isn't this just a triumph? LOVING Annie in that dress.

The Not-So-Hot
I really love Sandy Bullock but I didn't love her dress tonight. What was that? I'm not sure but it didn't work. J Lo. I love you too. A "slammin" body but that white thing with the chiffon crystal embellished cape... NO! Christina Aguleira. Another serial offender. No. Milla Jovovich. Nope. You should know better. Michelle Williams - in the same basket as Sandy. I love you and I wanted to love your outfit. But no. Not great. Despite being designed by a very Valentino. Scarlett. Again. You should know better. You can wear ANYTHING. Maybe it was the recent break up from cute hubbie Ryan Reynolds. Ok she's grieving. But no. Not a good dress. It was an oversized, nude (that culprit again) butterfly winged doily. Jennifer Love Hewitt. I mean its not like I was expecting great things, but this was awful. An ice princess number with far too much fake tan. Just wrong. Heidi Klum. Again, you should know better but you very rarely do. In a weird red toned tarzan number. Not cool!

Most Improved
It gives me great pleasure to give Annie Hathaway this award. I'm not sure if Rachel was finally ballsy enough to talk her into something more fashion forward, I don't know, but the Armani Prive really worked. HOT! And ps. Annie, who's your colourist? Fabulous colour honey. Second Most Improved? Tina Fey. She aint there, but she's a step closer and choosing L'Wren Scott was a good start. Maybe next year.
My Best Dressed Actress
Piper Peribo. No idea who she is but she was the winner. Classic black Oscar de la Renta. Red lips. Flawless skin with, wait for it, NO FAKE TAN! Beautiful hair in a chic and playful pony. Timeless yet modern. Fancy a woman looking young and beautiful and REAL. Love.

My Best Dressed Actor
Robert Downy Junior. Grey suit with red tie. Bang on as always RDJ. And a special mention to RPatz in that navy suit. Suave and beautiful.

Cool Kids on the Piste

Well I've been hitting the slopes both here in Australia and overseas for a few years now and I noticed a real step up this year in ski chic, and it was the boys leading the way people. I saw so many cool young things getting about the slopes in the most amazing array of ski chic. Largely driven by those uber cool snowboarding kids, the latest looks were all about patterns, print and colour. BIG. LOUD. COLOUR.

I tell you what it certainly made queuing for lifts that much more bearable.

But if you're not of the knuckle-dragging persuasion, and you prefer the more refined method of getting down the hill on two planks not one, there were still some gerat looks to be worn. The best looks incorporated fur, block colour or neutrals and slim line cuts. As far as I'm concerned the pastel should not be seen on the slopes. Never. No need. Come on, get bold, this is your excuse to get a little creative.

As with every season, I am in love with and am coveting pretty much the entire Moncler range... particularly the hot Alpin jacket (shiny cherry puffer with red fox hood, oooh aaah), the Cluny (sporty blue perfect for real skiing) and the Tarn (saucy white sleveless puffer with fox hood). Check out the Moncler site for further inspiration www.moncler.com/

SATC 2

Just back from Sex and the City 2 and the verdict? I liked it. Let's face it, like most hard core SATC fans I'm easily pleased. Just put the girls up on the big screen in an array of fabulous outfits, in glamorous locations and there I'll be, grinning from ear to ear for 2.5 hours. OK so there were a few scenes where I felt myself cringing (Samantha's declarations of, "YES! I have sex!" to a throng of unimpressed Muslim men in in a souk), but I didn't cringe because I felt it inappropriate. I cringed because I was embarrassed for her. Samantha is glamorous, confident and in control. Always. So to see her fall apart at the seams, in a public place is a little is uncomfortable for me.

Many serious film critics have panned the film for being culturally insensitive and inappropriate but I disagree. The girls asked questions that I too would ask. How do Muslim women eat french fries while wearing the traditional veil? No, I wouldn't humiliate a woman by asking her that but I can see myself pondering this while enjoying a drink with my friends. And no, personally I'm not comfortable with the idea that women must cover themselves in public and not speak, walk alongside a husband or have a job. No, those ideas don't wash with me but I understand that it happens and I show tolerance and respect the decision of women who choose live in this way.

As for laugh-out-loud moments, I can't say there were that many for me, certainly less than the first film although i do recall letting out a big belly laugh at the sight of Miranda circa 1986 sporting that horrific mushroom haircut. But despite not laughing as much as many of the other girls in the screening I attended, I still very much enjoyed it. I guess it was more of a savoring thing. I just enjoyed seeing the girls in all their glory again. They don't have to do much to impress me.

And then there's the eye candy. When it comes to SATC, largely for me, it's about the clothes. There are many items of clothing in this movie I'd very much like to own but sadly cannot afford. So, to the fashion... my wish list from the film includes:

Carrie's Galliano for Dior newspaper dress for looking so great on her all those years later, Samantha's gold harem pants - a knockout and beautifully matched with that sawdust belted jacket, Miranda's Etro print pant suit (arriving at the hotel in Abu Dhabi) and the fabulous shrug worn with it, not to be confused with her camel riding outfit with geometric patterns up top, didn't like that at all. Then there was Carrie's vintage j'adore Dior t-shirt worn with silver short sleeved bolero and violet ball gown skirt (shopping in the souk) which was genius.  As was her stunning midnight blue evening gown with split to thigh worn to drinks with Aiden. There was a also a fabulous white cropped jacket with crystal detail on the arms (Carrie), a dreamy print lightweight kaftan (worn as nightgown by Carrie) and that fabulous burnt orange pleat maxi dress (Carrie again).

Interestingly, we didn't see much of Steve, Smith and Harry which was a bit of a shame. I like seeing the girls in their relationships but I guess that was SATC1 - this film was all about the ladies. Oh, and was it just me or did Big look particularly hot? I've never really fancied Big. Charming, charismatic, chic - yes, yes and yes. But devilishly handsome? Comme ci comme ca. But in SATC2? Yep, I get it. I see it. And that fabulous vintage Rolex did little to dampen his allure.

The close-ups revealed that a little botox and restalyn has been indulged in by the ladies but who can blame them. Competing with twenty-somethings in Hollywood and trying to stay out of the trashy mag "Stars Without Make-Up" editions must be a daunting task.

Since the TV series finished we fans have been starved of Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha and Miranda and this film just gives us another taste of the fun, friendship and fashion we've missed. Like sherbet is to a healthy diet, SATC2 is pretty bad as a film but wonderfully sweet and enjoyable nonetheless.
